Planets in signs and houses Balance The Body Energy By Radiation Through Gems

Gemstones are prescribed to either strengthen or balance the energies of these planets in question, i.e. strengthen weak planets so that they do create some good effect, or further strengthen already strong planets, such that their effect is more pronounced. As an example, someone may want to strengthen Mercury to cure any speech impediment or skin inflammation, as a weak Mercury is known to cause these ailments. A person may want to strengthen Saturn if it is a Raj Yoga causing planet, in that case, in Saturn’s dasha or bhukti, the results given by Saturn multiply. Surely all good and bad effects multiply at the same time, there is a need for balance.
How do people wear these stones? These stones have to be of specific weight (in carats, or in ratti). They are worn either in gold or in silver in appropriate finger, during Shukla Paksha, when the planet is in own/friendly sign, on the planet’s day of the week, in the morning before 7:00 AM and after chanting the ruling god’s name 108 times. Needless to say, these gems should be flawless as much as possible and should be of good quality.
Name Stone Weight Wear in…
Sun Ruby (Maanik) 2 Carats Gold, in ring finger
Moon Pearl (Moti) 2 Carats Silver, in ring finger
Mars Red Coral (Munga) 3 Carats Gold (pref. 18 carat) or Silver, in ring finger
Mercury Emerald (Panna) 1.5 carats Gold, in ring or little finger
Jupiter Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) 2 carats Gold, in index finger
Venus Diamond (Heera) 1 carat Gold or silver in middle finger
Saturn Blue Sapphire (Neelam) 2 carats Gold, in middle finger
Rahu Garnet(Gomed) 3 carats Gold or Silver, in middle finger
Ketu Cat’s eye (Lahsuniya) 3 carats Gold, in middle finger
When deciding which finger the gem should be worn on, astrologers always consult the planetary friendship table. Mercury is a natural friend of Sun, therefore you can wear Emerald in the ring finger, which belongs to Sun.
A Diamond is not for everyone! Firstly, you should always consult an astrologer before you decide to wear a diamond. Secondly, it should not be worn on the ring finger as all of us are made to believe by the cool and jazzy television commercials. It is a natural friend of Saturn, therefore it should be worn only on the middle finger. It is not a natural friend of Sun and hence ring finger is not the place for it.
Are there any alternatives to wearing these gemstones? Yes, there are:
  • There are cheaper alternatives available in the market. e.g. you can replace Pukhraj with Yellow Zircon for Jupiter. Clear Zircon can be substituted for a diamond etc.
  • You can choose to worship the ruling deity e.g. to strenghten Mercury, you could worship Lord Vishnu.
  • You can also adjust the lifestyle accordingly. e.g. if you do not prefer to wear a stone for Saturn, you could wear dull colours, e.g. brown, black, gray etc. Change the life style to bring in more discipline, meditation, etc.

Planets in signs and houses About Vedic Gem Stones

In Vedic astrology, gemstones are recommended based on your horoscope. It is believed that by wearing prescribed gemstones you can overcome the obstacles in your life.

The great Indian Astronomer cum astrologer VARAHAMIHIRA was first to know & study of gemstone, and its effects on human beings.

The effect of Gems is basically through the energy vibrations it creates when worn in the body and also through its colour.

It has since been scientifically proved and documented the various frequencies of energy vibrations emitted by the organic Gemstones. They vary from Gems to Gems and compares well with the energy vibrations to offset the imbalance produced in the human body.

The Planets bestow benefits and also cause ill effects as are aspected in the Rashi.

No Gemstone is always good or always bad. All Gemstone has positive & negative effects. Before you wear any gemstone, one should consult any good astrologer.

As general rule, only gemstone of strongest planets (Favorable) in one’s horoscope should be used to wear. Never wear gemstone by date of birth. (Sun sign)

The following table gives brief description of Planets, gemstone & God/Goddess of planets.

PLANET ——GEMSTONE——-GOD/GODDESS

Sun ———–Ruby————— Lord Shiva

Moon———- Pearl ————– Lord Shiva/Parvathi/DurgaMa

Mars———- Coral————— Hanuman/ Kartikeya/Subramanya/Narasimha swamy

Mercury——- Emerald———– Vishnu/Parvathi

Jupiter——– Yellow-Sapphire —–Lord Shiva/Lord Brahma

Venus ——–Diamond ————- Lord Lakshmi/ DurgaMa

Saturn——- Blue-Sapphire ——– Lord Shani /Hanuman/Shiva

Rahu——- Gomed —————- Lord Hanuman/Lord shiva/ Subramanya

Ketu——— Cat’s eye ————-Ganesha/Bhairav

There are two types of philosophies in gemstone selection.

ANUKUL Choosing Method: A Vedic Gemstone will act “SAME” as it’s planet – So gems should be chosen for Anukul (favorable) planets.

PRATIKUL Choosing Method: A Vedic Gemstone will act “OPPOSITE” of its planet – So gems should be chosen for Pratikul (unfavorable) Planets.

Anukul choosing method, in which one’s auspicious (Anukul) planet(s) (exalted, moolatrikona stana, own sign, benefic, great friend, good house, owner of good house, etc.) is used for selection of gemstone, based on the concept that lucky planet = lucky gem.

Pratikul choosing method for overcoming a weak or evil planet, based on the misconception that a ‘pratikul’ (inauspicious) planet is strengthened by wearing it’s gem and there by it changes from being inauspicious (pratikul) to become auspicious (anukul).

An anukul planet can always be strengthened, but a pratikul planet should never be strengthened.

84% of World’s Gemologist believes in Anukul choosing method, only 16% believe in Pratikul choosing method.

I have seen many astrologers’s suggesting gemstones for Pratikul planet, but no gemstone will act against their planets. By wearing Pratikul planet gemstone you are increasing negative power of the planet.

I always suggest Anukul Choosing Method only.

For Benefic (Positive) Analysis.

1. If the planet is in exaltation.

2. If the planet is in its own sign.

3. If the planet is debilitated retrograde.

4. If the planet is exalted in navamsa chart

5. If the planet is placed in same house both in Rashi chart and Navamsa chart etc.

6. If the planet is in a good house.

7. If the planet is Lord of two good houses.

8. If the planet is functional benefic.

Still there are many more combinations.

For malefic (Negative) Analysis.

1. If the planet is debilitated.

2. If the planet is exalted retrograde.

3. If the planet is debilitated in navamsa chart.

4. If the planet is functional enemy of Lagna Lord.

5. If the planet is in conjunction with malefic lord.

6. If the planet is aspected by malefic lord.

7. If the planet is Lord of two bad houses.

8. If the planet is in a bad house.

Still there are many more combinations.

When choosing gemstone, astrologer adds up the plus (+) & minus (-) in one’s horoscope. & the planet which gives maximum number of pluses is selected & corresponding Gemstone is recommended.

Important Note: -

1. Don’t wear gemstones without consulting a good Vedic astrologer.

2. Don’t wear gemstone according to date of birth.

Planets in signs and houses Quality Of Gems(Source:planetarygems.com)

Becoming an educated consumer is not such an easy matter when dealing with all the variables related to the purchase of a colored gemstone. These many variables will determine the quality, therefore the price.
In general
, the quality and value of a gemstone is determined by a combination of what are called the "Four C's":

Color, Clarity (degree of flawlessness)
, Cut and Carat weight.
Treatments also should be added to the list, as they play a very important role in today's evaluation of quality and price. If a stone is left untreated, in a nowadays market filled with treatments of all sorts, it acquires a very substantial value over a gem that has been treated.

Clarity is the degree of flawlessness. As a general rule, a clear transparent gemstones with no visible flaws is the most valued.
GIA (Gemological Institute of America) classifies colored gems clarity of three types:
Type 1 gemstones, "virtually inclusion-free" such as aquamarine, topaz, green tourmaline, tanzanite, citrine, damburite.
Type 2 gemstones, "usually included" such as rubies, all color sapphires, garnets, peridots, amethysts, zircons, cat's eye chrysoberyls, pearls, corals.
Type 3 gemstones, almost "always included", such as emeralds and red tourmalines.
Some gemstones are valued for their inclusions! Phenomenal gemstones owe their stars and eyes to inclusions. Tiny inclusions reflecting back light put the eye in the so called "cat's eye" and the "star" in the star sapphire. Inclusions can also be a birthmark, telling us where a particular gemstone was mined.
As a general rule, look for eye flawless stones. If the inclusions are too numerous, too visible to the naked eye and/or distracting, avoid such stones.

Color is another key factor. A common misperception in judging gems is that people assume that the darker the color, the better the stone. That isn't true: color can be too dark, like some "blue" sapphires that look more black than blue.

If a gem's color is too dark, it is subdued and lifeless. A much better rule of thumb is the brighter and more rich and vivid the color, the better. In general, within each gemstone variety, a clear, medium or medium-dark tone, very intense and saturated primary color is the most preferred. Muted colors or colors between hues, which you might find very attractive, are usually a bit less expensive. Look at the color in different kinds of light. Sometimes, in daylight, a gem shows one color and in artificial light another one. This color change gems are usually very attractive and in most case expensive. (alexandrite is the most well known example, but sapphires, garnets, and occasionally spinels can also change color).

Let's talk about the cutting in a gemstone. It use to be that a good Cut was something that did not cost more. Nowadays, a good cut stone is worth much more than a badly cut one. A savvy consumer knows that a well cut gemstone can add or subtract a lot of beauty. And beauty (together with rarity and freedom from enhancement...basically) is what we pay in a gemstone. A well-cut, faceted gemstone reflects light back

evenly across its surface area when held face up. If the stone is too deep and narrow, areas will be dark. If it is too shallow and wide, the stone will be washed out and lifeless (the so-called window). The best way to judge cut is to look at similar gemstones next to each other.

The weight of a gemstone is measured in Carats and points. There are 100 points in one carat, and 1 carat equals to one-fifth of a gram. As a rule, the price increases per carat as we go from smaller to larger stones, since the larger stones are more limited in supply. However, the price does not increase proportionately - there are disproportionate jumps. And the larger the stone (all else being equal in terms of overall quality), the more disproportionate the increase in cost per carat may be.

Fair Cost: Here we could go on and on for days and days about the value of a gem. In the end, this is the dilemma, not only in purchasing a gemstone, but in choosing or evaluating everything in life. What is the real value? Simply said, the exact cost of a stone should depend on its beauty, rarity and, of course, a combination of the 4Cs .

We will talk about the general beliefs that most people have when approaching Jyotish Gemology. Yet, beliefs and theories are so many that we felt the urge to clarify and... simplify.

It is a widespread concept that a potent Jyotish gemstone should be of flawless clarity, untreated, and of a certain carat weight. These are the most commonly accepted features for a good, Jyotish gem. I would add that a good gem should have a fair price as well, and this also will depend by many factors.
Let's first talk about
clarity, classified as the degree of flawlessness. As a rule, a clear, transparent gemstones with no visible flaws is the most valued.
GIA (Gemological Institute of America) classifies colored gems clarity of three types:
Type 1 gemstones, "virtually inclusion-free" such as aquamarine, topaz, green tourmaline, tanzanite, citrine, damburite.
Type 2 gemstones, "usually included" such as rubies, sapphires, garnets, peridots, amethysts, zircons, cat's eye chrysoberyls, pearls, corals.
Type 3 gemstones, almost "always included", such as emeralds and red tourmalines.

As per the most widespread and accepted Jyotish, gemological principle, a propitious gem SHOULD be flawless. Most of the Jyotish astrologers would mention this characteristic as the primary one for auspicity and good fortune. It is also alluded in the Vedic scriptures dealing with gemology that
"inward luster, transparency, illumination with rays, sparkle, free from impurities and good formation of the shape are the characteristics of good gems" (Agni Purana, 246.13-14)

As per the GIA classification above, expect to get flawless gems in type1category. These gems can, however, be increasingly harder to get in flawless clarity in large sizes, let's say above 10 cts.
Type2 gemstones include basically all the nine, primary Jyotish gems such as
rubies, all colors sapphires, including yellow, blue, white, all garnets (including hessonite), chrysoberyl cat's eyes, pearls, and corals. So expect to get the majority of them, "usually included" (see the GIA classification about clarity above)

This picture of a 19th century, Indian navaratna (kindly permitted by a friend, private collector) shows well enough the poor clarity of each gem.
They are all opaque to translucent at the most, except for possibly for the uncut brown diamond, the orange hessonite, the center emerald, that look to have a certain degree of transparency.
So, if a Jyotish gem should be flawless, then, why all the gems used in this gorgeous Indian navaratna are NOT flawless (not even eye clean)?

Because natural, untreated gemstones are NOT easily available in complete flawless clarity.

Thus, when choosing a Jyotish stone, look for "eye" flawless clarity. In other words, an auspicious Jyotish gem should be appear flawless when view closely.

Remember that emeralds are an exception, as they are type3 gems, and almost always included. Emeralds will always have some imperfections internally and/or externally. But again, it is important that the "jardin" or emerald inclusions are few, not distracting, and the overall presence is transparent and enjoyable.

A few words about color...We think that color is not a key factor in a Jyotish quality gem. Although color is paramount in determining a colored stone value in today's market, combined with the other variables of clarity, cut and carat weight, there is no scientific proof that, for astrological purposes, a darker stone versus a lighter one has more power or vice versa. As we see it, it is a karmic choice.
Let me explain... If somebody makes $50,000 per month, it will not have great problems in purchasing a top, colored gem of good carat weight of few thousands dollars. On the other hand, if another person has not access to a big amount of cash, he or she, instinctually will go for a less expensive, lighter tone gem. It is our present karmic situation that will determine our preferences and choices. In both cases, both stones, the more expensive and the less expensive will effectively be suitable in terms of astrological power, for those particular people.

Sticking with gemological facts and forgetting for a moment the "spiritual" component (by the way...some people are also selling for hard cash the spiritual component of Jyotish gemology...by keeping prices artificially high and not reflecting the exact market value of their products) keep in mind that in gemmy colors (gemmy color means that a colored gem has the finest color found), light imperfections are totally accepted and forgiven, as a top color gem is always very rare, especially in larger sizes over 2 ct. or 3 ct. "Gem quality" stone is a specimen that has top color (usually a medium-dark, well saturated primary color, without being too dark or blackish), top clarity (note that I did not say perfect clarity) and is, let's say, over 2 or 3 ct. in size. (But again, gemological experts emphasize that gem quality is anything over 5 ct. in size for most gemstones).
On the other hand, lighter colors should have excellent clarity, should be well cut and should be relatively less costly compared to gem quality stones.

Attention! Examples of not Jyotish quality gemstones. Note the poor, opaque clarity. These gems, as per our opinion, should not be used as astrological remedy. Other people may express different opinions. This is usually the quality seen in many Indian, astrological, Jyotish jewelry.

Examples of Jyotish quality gemstones. Note the excellent, "eye clean" clarity (and top color as well!). These gems should be used as effective, astrological remedy. Notice that the emerald has few inclusions.

So far, we have seen which clarity to look for in an effective Jyotish gem. We have also clarified a bit about color as well.
In this contest, we would like to spend a few words about Cutting.
Cutting, as per our opinion, is another very important characteristic in a Jyotish gemstone and I would not hesitate to list it a primary factor for effectiveness .
As a rule of thumb, a well cut gem has more life, vibration, character and beauty of a poorly cut gem.

A well-cut faceted gemstone reflects the light back evenly across its surface area when held face up. If the stone is too deep and narrow, areas will be dark. If it is too shallow and wide, parts of the stone will be washed out and lifeless (the so-called window...see the stone below, on the left). The best way to judge cut is to look at similar gemstones next to each other.
Like in everything else, there is an exception to the rule, and that is when we are in the presence of a gem quality gemstone (again, gem quality is the combination of excellent clarity, top color and relatively decent size). In this case, if the big size, top clarity and perfect color are all there, the cut can be not as perfect as it should be (and in many, real cases, some imperfections in the cutting are the norm.)
To summarize, a good cutting in a gem, can be compared to a good house, well built, perfect and accurate in all its details. It is a pleasure to live in a nice house!. On the other hand, if the house is not well builted, and many comforts are missing, we do not enjoy it.
See the samples below for a visual understanding.

A very poorly cut, yellow sapphire. Note the disturbing "window" in the middle of the gem. No sparkle is produced by this cutting. Considered a low quality gem.

A good, acceptable cutting, with moderate window. However, being a rare Thai ruby of 1 ct. in size, the window is well forgiven by the exceptional, flawless clarity of this gem. Good quality stone.

Excellent cutting, with no window. The light is reflected perfectly throughout the stone. Very enjoyable gem, with vibrant presence and character. Excellent quality stone.

Now let's talk about Treatments: Because, we aspire perfection...
Gemstones have been treated since the beginning of their trade. The Roman historian Pliny mention in its "Historia Naturalis", how to "transform one stone into another". Even Egyptians had written detailed methods of treating gems. Of course, the purpose of treatments is to improve a stone's appearance.
In Vedic gemology, a natural gem to be used as a talisman, is preferred to be untreated.

First question is: Are untreated gems readily available in today's market place?
Nowadays, gem treatments are done routinely and are an intrinsic part of the trade. It is estimated that a good 90% of all gem material mined is treated some way or another. Natural gem varieties are subjected to heat treatment, irradiation, color diffusion, coating dyeing, oiling, polymers intrusion to name the most common...and for sure I am leaving few others out.
In regards of the nine, astrological Jyotish gemstones, the possible treatments we will face are heat treatment for rubies, all color sapphires, green and red tourmalines, topazes. Dyeing and coating for pearls and red corals, oiling or polymers for emeralds, irradiation for diamonds. Hessonites, rhodolites, and all other garnets along with cat's eye chrysoberyls, spinels, damburites, kyanites are never treated.

For Jyotish purposes, let's examine in more details the possible treatments done to the 9 gems used in Vedic astrology.
Sapphires: ...It is estimated that 96% of total, worldwide production of sapphires are heated to improve on color and clarity. A small 4% is available unheated. Scientific knowledge of unheated crystal characteristics is a must to differentiate in between heated and not heated sapphires.
Sometimes, though, sapphires (white sapphires are the best example) are heated at low temperatures (around 500 to 700 C), opposed to high temperature treatment, which is just below the sapphire melting point. Low heat treatment is done to remove excessive rutile (the so called "silk") from the stone inside. This low heat treatment is sometimes very difficult to detect as the crystal DOES NOT undergo major changes. As major gem labs, or even very experted gemologists and dealers cannot detect low heat treatment, is then the stone truly unheated or it is considered heat treated?
The only person that knows exactly how much a stone has been heated or not at all is the miner. Example, miners in Sri Lanka are experts in determining the quality and characteristics of a rough specimen usually, after being brought up from the mine's depth, and washed. Only the miner will know if a stone has to be heated or not, but then again, is low heat treatment considered bad for the astrological effect or not...Understandably, we have a dilemma here.

Every thing in this universe is composed of Seven Rays of colour. We can see these rays in Rainbow. We can call it Meghadhanusha - VIBGYOR-rays. VIBGYOR RAYS mean combination of VIOLET, INDIGO, BLUE, GREEN, YELLOW, ORANGE & RED. Through a Prism one can find or see these COSMIC rays. In the ancient Indian text, the "KURMA PURANA", the seven planets are to be seen as condensations of the seven cosmic rays. It was understood that on our planet Earth the greatest condensation of the cosmic rays are found in natural gem stones. Gems (Therapy) and Astrology is co-related. In study of Ayurveda & Homeopathy study of astrology is very important. Gem stone therapy should not be deemed the practice of medicine and should not be viewed as a substitute for consultations with your physician or other health care professionally, which please note. Gem Therapy is simple in application and with out any risk.

Some Alternative Gems (Secondary) & Their uses:

Amethyst: Amethyst is the ray of spiritual Mastery. This vitalises man’s spiritual nature with life giving power and animates and expands the soul consciousness. This stone is particularly used to cure gout. It is also useful in getting good sleep or pleasant dreams.

Green Ray: The key note of our planet and colour of nature. The green radiance is essential to our health and happiness. It is the colour of balance and harmony. Green opens and enlightens the mind and spirit with Wisdom (Yellow Ray) and Truth (Blue Ray), which are the components of green. The fulfillment or completion of the Green rays in its subjective aspect is the man of balanced Mind & the man of peace and Harmony, Sympathy and Generosity.

Amber: Arabs use powdered Amber to prevent miscarriage; they also use it as a medicine for boils, carbuncles, ulcers etc. Epistaxix was treated by putting the Amber in side the nose. For treating Gaitre, the stone was tied round the neck. Burnt Amber ash is useful for woman in labour pains and easy delivery. In very hot countries people keep the Amber in hand to cool their body.

Brown Agate: Fakirs always use a necklace of this stones. Muslims consider this stone very sacred. In ancient times this stone very used for stopping excessive bleeding in women during periods. Personally I have found this stone very sensitive for dowsing.

Carnelion Or Blood Stone: Used mostly for Haemorrhages from different parts of the body, Acne, & Ulcers.

Crystal: Crystal was used in ancient times to reduce glandular swelling and to cure eye diseases like glaucoma, conjunctivitis. It was also supposed to strengthen the heart. Personally I have found that a necklace of crystals when worn brings down high temperature and cools the body.

Garnet: Garnet is useful to cure Eczema, Psoriasis and other skin affections.

A list of some common elements and the gems that might be useful in them is given below. Gems do provide only a helping hand and are not a complete cure in themselves. Regular research has given good positive results; hence some diseases which can be cured through the help of gem cosmic rays are given:

  • Acidity, Digestive disorder, High Blood Pressure - Emerald Gem
  • Common cold, constipation, Bronchitis - Red Corol
  • Insomania - Moon Stone
  • Piles – Red Coral & Pearl
